Freeport Local News By Elisbeth A Rooney of Wild Rose Marketing Freeport, Illinois is a small rural community approximately 110 miles northwest of Chicago with a very high rate of unemployment as many businesses have been forced to close or move in the current economy. The past year was especially bad for area farmers as we had a great deal of long term flooding and many fields were still unplanted as late as July. As a result of the flooding and the economy Freeport now has a very high level of financial poverty and homelessness and only one small 10 bed shelter to handle the impending disaster here. However we do have a local church which does 5 days a week open its doors to feed the hungry at 11:00 AM and no one ever leaves hungry. On Thanksgiving Day this church and close to 50 volunteers served a wonderful Thanksgiving feast to the poor, homeless and homebound elderly of our community. Were it not for the kindness of the members of our local Salvation Army, many families would have gone without this Thanksgiving. These people put their own families on hold to tend to the needs of the poor in this community and I for one feel they should be applauded for the work they do even on a Holiday to make sure others are fed.
